If there is a formula out there for creating one of the best movies of all time, then George Lucas discovered it when he created Star Wars. It is difficult, however, to pinpoint exactly what made it such a famous and legendary film. Was it anything specific at all, or did it just simply tick all the boxes? Looking at specific elements shows that it was probably the latter.

The story – the epic nature of the Star Wars movies makes describing the plotlines difficult. Woven with sub-plots and studded with romance and good vs. evil, it touches on every concept of story-telling out there. The first three episodes (A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi) focus on Luke Skywalker, who grows in front of our eyes from a young man living a meagre existence in Tatooine, to a Jedi who becomes one of the key players in fighting the Galactic Empire. The last three movies (The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith) follow a plotline which takes place before the birth of Luke Skywalker, focusing on the rise of Anakin Skywalker and his eventual transformation into the feared Darth Vader.

The characters and cast – everybody has one Star Wars character that they love, and another that they loathe. Whether it’s the dashing Han Solo or the young Luke Skywalker, the gorgeous Princess Leia or the masked villain Darth Vader, there are characters both from the main story and the peripheral subplots that catch your attention. The inspired performances from the actors add a new layer of devotion for the fans to feast on. And from Darth Vader mask to R2D2 mailboxes, the franchise has carried on this love of the characters.

The special effects – nowadays they may seem a little dated, but they still carry the charm and the enchantment that allows Lucas to tell the story. The explosions, the creatures from other planets, they were all so convincing and creative that children and adults’ imaginations alike were enthralled. Many fans were convinced that the newer movies were ruined by the use of state-of-the-art CGI technology, and that the ‘enhanced’ versions of the old movies were close to sacrilege. It does show, however, that the movies moved with the times and allowed a new legion of fans to fall in love with them.

The quotes – Challenge anyone to recite at least one quote from Star Wars, and I can guarantee you they will be able to without thinking.

“Luke, I am your father.” – Darth Vader reveals Skywalker’s true lineage in a heart-wrenching moment that will never lose its emotion, even after the thousands of parodies.

“Use the force, Luke.” – the famous instruction of Luke’s mentor Obi-Wan Kenobi.

“Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi; you’re my only hope.” – the message from Princess Leia pleading for help from the Jedi Obi-Wan. The first time Luke sees his sister, although he doesn’t know this at the time. This unfortunately leads to feelings towards her that are not exactly brotherly…

And what finishes off this list? The fans. George Lucas himself didn’t foresee this type of following, which turned into a roaring surge of wild, unprecedented love for the movies.
So the Star Wars movies have accumulated awards, broken box-office records and set a new standard for franchising movies. With all that’s mentioned above, it’s no wonder.
